Gather the townsfolk and ready your spells as we venture back to Innistrad in Magic: The Gathering’s latest expansion—Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. The 89th expansion from Wizards of the Coast is the first set of a two-part series, with Innistrad: Crimson Vow coming in two months after.
What to expect from the Midnight Hunt
Just like the first Innistrad expansion introduced back in 2011, Innistrad: Midnight Hunt keeps its Gothic theme, pitting you against werewolves, vampires, warlocks, and other creatures of the night. It also carries over some of the old mechanics made popular by the first Innistrad expansion, with the addition of newer ones—just to give the players something new to tinker with.
Daybound /Nightbound
The new Daybound and Nightbound mechanic uses the double-faced card design that appeared in the first Innistrad expansion, letting you “transform” or flip cards on their back to get a transformed version with new abilities. When a player doesn’t cast a spell during their turn, Day becomes Night on the next turn. If a player is able to cast at least two spells during their turn, Night becomes Day on the next turn.
Coven
The new Coven ability relies on the use of creatures that have different powers. Power refers to the number before the slash and can be found in the lower right corner. Depending on the card, Coven abilities can be triggered by having three cards with different power sets or by paying an activation cost.
Disturb
A new graveyard mechanic, Disturb lets you cast a creature card that was put into your graveyard for its Disturb cost. Once returned, it becomes a Spirit creature. This new mechanic also utilizes the double-faced card design so once a creature card comes back, you’ll need to flip it on its back to show the transformed creature and its new abilities.
Decayed
While considered another new ability for the set, Decayed can only be seen in Zombie tokens. Creature tokens with Decayed cannot block and are sacrificed at the end of the combat phase after they attack. Spells and abilities of some creatures can help you create Zombie tokens with Decayed.
Flashback
One of the staples of the old Innistrad expansion, Flashback lets you cast or play a spell from your graveyard for a specific casting cost. This gives you the benefit of using the spell again during the course of the game. Once the spell has been cast using its Flashback cost, it is exiled or removed from the game.
Investigate
Investigate was a popular mechanic in the previous Innistrad expansion since it gave you the ability to create a Clue token which you can then sacrifice to draw a card. In Magic, being able to draw an extra card or two can be a potential game changer.
A peek at some of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt products
Wizards of the Coast released a number of products for the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion including Set Boosters and Commander Decks. For the media drop, it even came with a special engraved wooden box.

The Innistrad: Midnight Hunt Set Boosters box comes with 30 packs with 12 cards in each one. Each pack is guaranteed a Rare or Mythic Rare card (some packs actually have both), an Art card and a foil card. If you’re lucky, you can even chance upon List cards from older expansion sets or a foil-stamped signature Art card.
The Set Booster packs also contain full-art lands that show the different Innistrad landscape and Showcase Equinox variations of the standard cards. Showcase Equinox cards offer a completely different artwork and border making them stand out more than your regular cards.
There are also two pre-configured Commander Decks: Coven Counters and Undead Unleashed. Each Commander product comes with a 100-card deck with 15 new cards, a deck box, 10 double-sided token cards, a Life Wheel counter, a Strategy insert, and a Reference card.

Coven Counters utilizes the new Coven mechanic, which lets you beef up your creatures’ power and toughness with +1/+1 counters. The deck has Leinore, Autumn Sovereign as your main legendary commander. However, she can be swapped with other legendary creatures in the deck like Kyler, Sigardian Emissary.
Undead Unleashed sports a zombie-themed deck, which capitalizes on the use of the new Decayed mechanic. With Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver as your main commander, you’ll be able to spawn your own zombie horde to overwhelm your opponents. You can also swap him with Eloise, Nephalia Sleuth, another legendary creature in the deck.
While both Commander decks are playable out of the box, you can still customize them with other cards from the Midnight Hunt set to give them a more competitive edge.
If you feel like you’re in the mood to battle werewolves, vampires, and other horror creatures, Innistrad: Midnight Hunt products are currently available in gaming stores nationwide.
