Netflix has launched a subscription plan completely free of charge for Android users in Kenya.
In a blog post published on Monday, Sept. 20, Netflix’s Product Innovation Director Cathy Conk said that the company hopes this program would encourage more people in Kenya to subscribe to its premium plans.
Similar to its paid tier, the no-cost plan gives subscribers access to Netflix ad-free. The difference is that they can only stream one-fourth of the content in the app’s paid deals, and it does not allow users to stream to TV nor download titles for offline viewing on their mobile app.

When signing up for the plan, Kenyans will only be required to provide their email, confirm they are over 18, and create a password. No payment information is required. “Then you can sit back and watch many of Netflix’s most popular series and films, as well as enjoy our personalized recommendations, parental controls, and profiles (including kids),” Conk wrote.
“If you’ve never watched Netflix before — and many people in Kenya haven’t — this is a great way to experience our service,” Cork added. “And if you like what you see, it’s easy to upgrade to one of our paid plans so you can enjoy our full catalog on your TV or laptop as well.”
In related news, the House of Representatives of the Philippines has approved a bill imposing value-added tax (VAT) to digital and electronic transactions, including Netflix and Spotify.
