Xiaomi has announced it will no longer carry the Mi branding for all its upcoming smartphones and devices, XDA Developers reported on Monday, August 23.
In a statement released to the portal, Xiaomi confirmed that the devices will no longer be called “Mi,” but simply “Xiaomi.” For instance, the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 12 will now be referred to as Xiaomi 12.
Mi officially debuted as a sub-brand of Xiaomi back in August 2011 when it launched its first smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi 1. According to Xiaomi’s co-founder and CEO Lei Jun, “Mi” stands for two things: “Mobile Internet” and “Mission Impossible.”
Ten years later, today, Xiaomi is dropping “Mi” from its product names, beginning with the MIX 4 smartphone. A representative for the company told XDA that all of its upcoming products will follow suit.
Though the Beijing-based company is best known for its smartphones, Xiaomi also sells many products related to lifestyle, including televisions, laptops, refrigerators, air fryers, smartwatches, scooters, robots, hairdryers, among others. Previously, OPPO has been categorizing its products into three sub-brands: Mi, Redmi, and POCO. Soon, that list will become Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO, changing the conversation from sub-brand versus independent brands.
XDA reported that the company has already released several products without the Mi branding in China.
In other Xiaomi news, leaks suggest that the company is working on a smartwatch with a 360-degree display.
