Microsoft has announced the official release date of Windows 11. In a blog post published on Aug. 31, Aaron Woodman, general manager for Windows marketing, said that the new operating system will be available starting October 5.
“On this day, the free upgrade to Windows 11 will begin rolling out to eligible Windows 10 PCs and PCs that come pre-loaded with Windows 11 will start to become available for purchase,” Woodman said.
Similar to many Windows upgrades in the past, Windows 11 will be available in phases beginning October 5. New eligible devices will be offered the upgrade first, followed by in-market eligible devices in the next weeks and months.
“Following the tremendous learnings from Windows 10, we want to make sure we’re providing you with the best possible experience,” Woodman continued. “We expect all eligible devices to be offered the free upgrade to Windows 11 by mid-2022.”
In addition, not all of the announced features will be available at launch. This includes Android apps which, according to The Verge, will be available for Windows Insiders in the coming months, suggesting that it likely won’t launch to all Windows 11 users until 2022.
When Microsoft first announced Windows 11 last June, it said that only those devices with 1GHz or higher processor, at least a dual-core 64-bit chip or SoC, at least 64 GB storage, and a TPM 1.2 chip can get the free upgrade.
If you have a Windows 10 PC that’s eligible for the upgrade, Windows Update will let you know when it’s available. You can also check to see if Windows 11 is ready for your device by going to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
However, if your PC isn’t fully compatible with Windows 11, you can still use Windows 10 until Microsoft ends support for the OS on October 14, 2025.
