Xbox confirms console shortage to continue into 2022

Xbox Vice President of Gaming Phil Spencer has dropped some bad news for gaming aficionados: the shortage of Xbox X/S consoles will likely stretch into 2022.

In an interveiw with The Wrap, Spencer pointed out that Microsoft’s struggle in rolling out new units is not solely caused by the ongoing global chip shortage. Still, it has played a major role in the interference with console production of the industry’s key players.

This, of course, incldes them and Sony, who previously warned that its PlayStation 5 consoles will remain in short supply through 2022 as well.

“I think it’s probably too isolated to talk about it as just a chip problem,” Spencer said.

“When I think about, what does it mean to get the parts necessary to build a console today, and then get it to the markets where the demand is, there are multiple kind of pinch points in that process,” he continued. “And I think, regretfully, it’s going to be with us for months and months, definitely through the end of this calendar year and into the next calendar year.”

“The thing that’s most disappointing is just the fan disappointment,” he added. “People really want this new generation of consoles — they’re good consoles, both from us and the other platform holders — and they want the new functionality. We’re working hard to bring them to market but it’s going to be a challenge that we’ll work through for quite a while.”

As Gamesindustry.biz notes, Spencer pledges that Microsoft will continue looking into the issue extensively and expedite the production of its consoles to meet consumer needs.

Apart from the Xbox X/S and PS5, the ongoing global chip shortage has been hampering the production of Nintendo Switch.
