Android 12 revives dessert names tradition with ‘Snow Cone’

Google is bringing back its dessert naming tradition for Android, with the official reveal of Android 12’s sweet moniker: Snow Cone.

It was announced by Google’s vice president of engineering for Android, Dave Burke, in a tweet on Monday, October 4. The move coincides with the launch of Android 12’s source code on the Android Open Source Project after the software giant has released several developer previews and beta builds in the past months.

Google used to name the latest versions of Android after famous confectioneries for about a decade. Android 1.5 was referred to as “Cupcake,” 1.6 is “Donut,” 2.0 is “Eclair,” 4.4 is “KitKat,” and 8.0 is “Oreo,” to name a few.

However, the California-based company stopped using Android’s treats-themed codenames out in the public when it launched Android 10 in 2019.

Although Android 10 was called Quince Tart and Android 11 was Red Velvet Cake internally, Google would simply call these versions of the OS by their numerical value when out in the open.

Apart from reviving the tradition with the upcoming launch of Android 12, the company has also revamped the new OS with features such as Material You design, dynamic theming, enhanced privacy settings, and redesigned widgets.

Google said in a blog post that Android 12 is scheduled to launch on Pixel phones first in the “next few weeks.” It’ll also come to Samsung Galaxy, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Tecno, Vivo, and Xiaomi devices later this year.
