Apple introduces new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro, M1 Max processors

Apple has unveiled its next-gen MacBook Pro during its fall 2021 “Unleashed” event on Tuesday, October 19. The new model comes in two sizes—14 inches and 16 inches—with a heap of features designed for developers, filmmakers, music producers, or anyone who needs hefty power for their tasks.

The 2021 MacBook Pro is powered by Apple’s all-new M1 Pro and M1 Max chipsets that take last year’s M1 processor to the next level.

In a blog post published after the event, Apple said that the M1 Pro features up-to-10 core CPU and up-to-16-core GPU that enable the MacBook Pro to deliver up to 70 percent faster CPU and up to 2x faster GPU performance than last year’s model.

It also delivers up to 200GB of memory bandwidth — nearly 3x the bandwidth of M1 — and supports up to 32GB of fast unified memory. It also provides the notebook with a ProRes accelerator, which makes video processing fast and with less power consumption.

Meanwhile, the M1 Max features the same powerful 10-core CPU as M1 Pro, and doubles the GPU with up to 32 cores for up to 4x faster GPU performance than M1. It also has up to 400GB of memory bandwidth — 2x that of M1 Pro and nearly 6x that of M1 — and up to 64GB of fast unified memory.

M1 Max also offers an enhanced media engine that features two ProRes accelerators for even higher multi-stream performance.

These new chipsets are backed with storage ranging from 512GB to 8TB that uses a faster SSD capable of up to 7.4GB/s read speeds.

As rumored previously, the new MacBook Pro features a redesign in a nod to Apple’s old polycarbonate MacBooks. Unlike its more recent predecessors, the MacBook Pro comes with an aluminum shell that is curved around the sides.

Another notable change is found in the new Magic Keyboard, which now comes with an all-back background and without the Touch Bar. This OLED touchscreen was first launched in the 2016 MacBook Pro and is now replaced with a standard row of function keys.

Both MacBook Pro models sport a Liquid Retina XDR display with a resolution of 3456×2234 for the 16-inch variant and 3024×1964 for the 14-inch model.

It is supported by a mini-LED backlighting, full Display-P3 wide color coverage, 1600 nits peak brightness, and 1000 nits sustained brightness.

Enhancing the display further is a new ProMotion technology, which features an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate. With this new tool, the MacBook Pro automatically varies the refresh rate of its display to match the motion of a user’s on-screen content to help preserve battery life, and makes tasks more fluid and even more responsive.

Apple has also trimmed down the screen’s border on all sides and placed the laptop’s 1080p FaceTime HD camera in a new notch instead of incorporating it in the panel.

The new MacBook Pro promises an improved audio experience with its new six-speaker Dolby Atmos sound system that comprises two tweeters for a clearer soundstage and four force-canceling woofers. Its support for spatial audio provides you with an immersive surround sound when jamming to your playlist or binge-watching the latest series.

In addition, the machine’s “studio-quality” headphones are engineered with a reduced noise floor compared to the previous g

Years after MacBook users have complained about the laptop’s lack of ports, Apple has finally decided to bring back several of those it removed in 2016.

The 2021 MacBook Pro now has three Thunderbolt 4 ports, an SD card slot, an HDMI 2.0 port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Another highlight is the return of the MagSafe port, which allows you to top up the device using the two-meter MagSafe 3 cable included in the box.

With these new ports, the M1 Pro-enabled MacBook Pro can support up to two external displays with 6K resolution, while the one with M1 Max chip can support up to four, including three Pro Display XDRs and a 4K TV, all at the same time.

Apple has also boosted the new MacBook Pro with “the longest battery life ever on a Mac notebook.” The 16-inch model’s 100-watt-hour battery gets up to 21 hours of video playback and 14 hours of web browsing, while the 14-inch model’s 70-watt-hour battery delivers up to 17 hours of video playback and 11 hours of web browsing.

As for its chargers, the 16-inch model ships with a beefy 14-watt brick, while the 14-inch variant comes with a 67-watt adapter if you’re getting the 8-core CPU M1 Pro and 96-watt charger for the other models.

The California giant also claims that, unlike other pro notebooks, the new MacBook Pro delivers the same level of performance whether it is plugged in or using the battery.

The new MacBook Pro comes in two colors—Space Gray and Silver—with a price tag of at least P116,990 for the 14-inch model and P146,990 for the 16-inch. While Apple has yet to confirm its release date in the Philippines, the units will begin rolling out to customers and select stores in the US on October 26.
