Twitter rolls out online tipping feature to all users

Twitter has begun rolling out its “tips” feature to all its users around the globe, granting everyone access to tip their favorite accounts for their entertaining tweets or noble causes.

The feature, which was first introduced to some users last May, enables creators to receive money from their followers through an icon found on their profile and connected to their chosen online payment platform. Its expansion to all users this month comes with support for additional payment platforms, including GoFundMe and Bitcoin.

“People already drop links to their payment profiles in their bios and in their Tweets. Tips makes this easier to do, offering one fixed spot, right on your profile, where you can link to your Cash App, Patreon, Venmo and other platforms where people can supportyou,” Twitter explained in a blog post.

How does it work? First, go to the profile you want to tip, then click on the money icon next to their Follow button. There, you can select the payment service or platform you prefer to send money to.

After which, you’ll be taken off Twitter to the app of your selected service.

The payement services available so far are:

  • Bandcamp
  • Cash App
  • Chipper
  • Patreon
  • Razorpay
  • Wealthsimple Cash
  • Venmo

In addition to these, Twitter says creators can link their tip jars to their GoFundMe fundraising accounrt or PicsPay, a Brazilian mobile payments platform. Users can also tip with Bitcoin using Strike, a payments application built on the Bitcoin Lightning Network that allows people to send and receive Bitcoin. The feature is currently available to people in El Salvador and the U.S. (excluding Hawaii and New York).

Twitter said it is bringing the Tips feature to iOS users first, then to Android users at a later time.
