Samsung eyes 2025 launch for 576MP camera, but it’s not for smartphones

Samsung has unveiled earlier this month the world’s first 200-megapixel smartphone camera sensor in the form of Samsung ISOCELL HP1. Now, the South Korean giant is aiming to launch another tech breakthrough in four year’s time—a 576-megaxpixel mobile camera.

As Gizmochina reported, the new camera sensor was revealed by Haechang Lee, Samsung Senior VP and Head of Automotive Sensors, during a presentation at the SEMI Europe Summit last Sept. 1. The report included an image of the company’s small pixel history and roadmap, which was in turn published by Image Sensors World on Sept. 7.

However, the 576MP camera sensor is seemingly being developed for automotive vehicles (AVs) and not for smartphones. It could also be used in drones and medical equipment, but Gizmochina said that its use-case as a smartphone camera doesn’t appear to be a priority for the tech developer.

The creation of this sensor is also part of Samsung’s ambition of going beyond 500-megapixel, which Samsung Executive Vice President for Sensor Business Yoongin Park announced last year. He discussed the company’s agenda after confirming that it is also working on a separate 600MP camera sensor for smartphones at that time.

Samsung could still be in the process of refining it, as photos leaked last December show that the sensor results in a 22mm bulge on the smartphone.

Apart from mobile devices and AVs, Samsung is also developing sensors for other categories, including drones and IoT (Internet of Things) devices.
