Roblox is launching an ID-based age verification system that allows players to confirm if they are eligible to use age-restricted features, the company announced in a blog post on Monday, September 21.
Later this year, Roblox will roll out its new communication tool called Spatial Voice. As IGN notes, the feature allows users to engage in voice chats within the game, and aims to mirror real-life conversation based on the players’ proximity and tone of voice, among others.
The new age verification system will then enable players to use the feature, which is currently being tested in limited Developer Beta, once it rolls out to all users who verify that they are at least 13 years of age.
Roblox said the verification is optional and comprises of two phases: The player must first upload a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license or passport, then take a selfie “on the spot” that would help the system determine that the uploader is not a bot and indeed owns the ID. The company assures players that it does not store raw ID document nor the selfie data.
Senior Product Manager Chris Ashton Chen said that this is part of their strategy to improve game safety. “As our community continues to expand, both globally and by age (nearly 50% of the users on our platform are over the age of 13 as of Q2 2021), we want to make sure that everyone can express themselves in a safe and respectful way,” Chen explained. “Being confident in a user’s age and identity is a critical foundation for metaverse safety and civility. We are developing new and innovative ways to do so while always respecting users’ privacy.”
The new verification system has rolled out in select areas on September 22 and will be available to players worldwide in the coming weeks.
