The ongoing quarantine has had many of us staying at home, and it’s no surprise that more consumers are turning to online channels for their purchases, including food and beverages (F&B).
According to Grab Next: Food Trends Report 2020/2021 by Nielsen IQ, the number of monthly active F&B businesses in the Philippines grew by more than 60% in 2020, while food businesses that joined Grab last year reported a 61% growth in total sales despite the pandemic. Meanwhile, the majority of consumers (65%) are parents belonging to the 25- to 44-year-old bracket.
Cakes and breakfast items were among the popular food products in the super app. Cake orders grew by 2.6x in 2020 as compared to 2019, while coffee and tea orders during breakfast grew by 2.3x in 2020, also for the same period.
Meanwhile, “pizza” was searched for more than 6,000,000 times on GrabFood in 2020.
The report also showed the top food categories Filipinos searched for on GrabFood:
- fast food
- pizza
- cake
- bakery
- Chinese
- doughnuts
- milk tea
- burgers
- coffee
- chicken
The increasing number of consumers ordering meals online is creating opportunities for merchant-partners. Grab Philippines Country Head Grace Vera Cruz said that they want to be the partner of choice of merchants by helping them adapt to the changes and take advantage of opportunities by providing solutions to better serve customers and grow.

As part of its commitment to merchant partners, Grab is set to roll out Grab Online Shop, an e-commerce solution that gives merchants the opportunity to set up and manage their own customisable online ordering website, with comprehensive technical and customer support from Grab.
Another solution is called Campaign Packages, which allows merchant partners to opt in to their preferred Grab-curated marketing packages that combine relevant advertising and promotional solutions.
Grab is also working with the International Finance Corp. (IFC) to improve financial literacy among small businesses. Grab’s merchant-partners will have access to IFC’s world-class training materials for free via GrabAcademy on the GrabMerchant app.
