Tesla unveils plans for humanoid bot that uses vehicle AI

Electric automobile company Tesla is planning to develop a humanoid robot engineered with “all of the same tools we use in [Tesla’s] cars,” CEO Elon Musk announced during the brand’s AI Day on August 20.

The prototype, aptly named “Tesla Bot,” will stand 5’8″, weigh 125 lbs, and be fabricated using “lightweight materials.” Musk said it will operate by the same AI built into the brand’s self-driving vehicles. Its head, for one, will be fitted with a set of autopilot cameras used by Tesla’s vehicles to sense the environment, as well as a screen to display information. It will also run on Tesla’s neural-net planning.

The Tesla Bot, according to Musk, is made to “navigate through a world built for humans” and would be able to “eliminate dangerous, repetitive and boring tasks,” including going outside to get some groceries. In addition, the bot would be able to carry up to 45 lbs and deadlift up to 150 lbs.

While the Tesla Bot can move at a speed of up to 5 mph, Musk remarked that it is “intended to be friendly” and that people can both “outrun” and overpower it. He added that the company will likely launch a prototype by next year.
