Instagram is getting rid of its swipe-up feature

In case you still haven’t heard, Instagram is ditching its swipe-up feature on August 30. The Facebook-owned social media platform announced it through an in-app notification sent to some of its users on Tuesday, August 24.

Instagram’s swipe-up feature was launched in late 2016 as a tool for businesses and creators to direct viewers of their Story to their website or a link to anything they are promoting.

As the feature’s name suggests, these links are accessed by swiping up on a user’s story. Only those accounts that are verified by Instagram or have at least 10,000 followers have access to this feature.

Not all Instagram users were able to receive the app’s notification on Tuesday, but according to the screenshot shared by The Verge, Instagram is replacing its swipe-up feature with link stickers.

Similar to swipe-up, these graphic Story add-ons will lead you to an external website when you tap on them.

Instagram said it has been testing the stickers among a small number of users since June. It will begin to roll out more broadly at the same time the app retires its swipe-up feature on August 30.

Vishal Shah, Instagram’s former head of product, also told The Verge the stickers are more aligned with how its subscribers use the app. And while viewers cannot respond to swipe stories, they can do otherwise with stories that have link stickers on them.
