The Pokémon Company and Universal Studios Japan (USJ) have teamed up to create what can possibly be a Poké-related attraction inside the famous theme park.
As announced by the companies on Wednesday, October 6, the long-term partnership intends to develop multiple projects considered as “groundbreaking” entertainment by 2022.
“Universal Studios Japan and The Pokémon Company will enter a long-term partnership to jointly explore groundbreaking entertainment that will immerse guests into the world of Pokémon with innovative technology and creativity beginning in 2022,” the statement says.
“We are honored to have a long-term partnership with The Pokémon Company while developing groundbreaking Pokémon entertainment at Universal Studios Japan for both Pokémon fans and our guests,” J.L. Bonnier, president and CEO of Universal Studios Japan, said in the press release. “The globally popular Pokémon characters combined with Universal’s innovative approach to creating authentic and one-of-a-kind theme park entertainment promise excitement for the entire family.”
The companies did not explicitly mention the construction of a Pokémon-themed park inside the USJ, but the fact that they aim to “immerse guests into the world of Pokémon” is quite a giveaway.
“This strategic alliance with Universal Studios Japan reflects our commitment to continue delivering the joy of Pokémon in ever-evolving ways for years to come. We are looking forward to the day when we can welcome fans from around the world to all enjoy it together,” added Tsunekazu Ishihara, president and CEO of The Pokémon Company.
The alliance also takes off from the partnership of USJ and Nintendo that resulted in the launch of Super Nintendo World on March 18 this year. Although The Pokémon Company is an entirely different entity from Nintendo, the Kyoto-based company owns a big percentage of the brand.
This is not the first time that Pokémon ventured into amusement parks, though. There was also Pokémon the Park, or PokéPark, that offered visitors twelve attractions, an arcade, event stage, shops, and cafes. It operated in Japan from March 18 to September 25 in 2005 prior to moving to Taiwan, where it was open from June 23 to September 24, 2006.
On July 17 this year, The Pokémon Company also launched Pokémon Wonder, a nature park where fans can experience a real-life adventure of hunting Pokémons inside a forest. The nature spectacle is set to run until April 3, 2022.
