macOS Monterey now available for download

In case you missed it, Apple has finally dropped the latest major release of its Mac operating system, macOS 12 Monterey, on Monday, October 25.

Same as previous upgrades, the macOS Monterey comes as a free update to compatible Macs running Apple silicon and Intel processors.

Although it will not bring radical changes to the macOS, unlike the previous Big Sur, it provides users with some improvements worth giving a go.

One of the highlights is the revamped FaceTime, which now allows you to start a call and invite other people, just like most conference calling programs. You can even add your contacts running Android or Windows OS into the call, with the new web version of the app.

Apart from that, FaceTime is now designed with spatial audio, which works when you pair your Mac with an AirPod or AirPods Max.

The other significant change is found in Safari, where the tabs bar now changes its color to match the web page you’re browsing. It also features Tab Groups, which allows you to bundle related websites together and switch between them easily.

According to a report by Engadget, Apple initially planned to remove the tabs bar completely until it decided to leave it as is in a later developer preview.

Then there’s also the Focus Mode, which Apple previously launched on iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, as well as Shortcuts automation, Quick Notes, and Live Text, which can extract text from any image, among other features.

Meanwhile, Monterey’s main highlights—the Universal Control that allows you to control your iPad with the keyboard, mouse, or trackpad of your Mac; and SharePlay that lets you sync streaming videos and music with other Apple users—will arrive on the macOS later this year.
