Google Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro are now official. Here’s everything you need to know

Google has officially launched the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro after several leaks and teasers have made the rounds in tech news for the last couple of months.

First announced last August, the Android maker’s newest pair of smartphones were finally unveiled during Google’s Pixel Fall Launch event held at 1 a.m. PHT on October 20.

The California giant’s most important Pixel in years, these new models are boosted with specs Google designed to be at par with Apple and Samsung’s flagship units — minus the hefty price tag.

For starters, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are powered by Google’s custom-developed Tensor chip, which takes after the Tensor Processing Units (TPU) Google uses in its data centers.

According to a report by GSMArena, the 5nm SoC has an octa-core processor with two whole Cortex-X1 powerful cores — the first chip to have more than one. There are also two mid-level cores as well as four power-efficient ones.

It then allows the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro to run smoother and launch apps faster with up to 80 percent performance increase over its predecessor, the Pixel 5.

Designed specifically around the Pixel 6 phones’ artificial intelligence, the Tensor chip takes mobile photography to a new level.

Both the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro’s rear cameras house a 50-megapixel 1/1.31-inch Samsung GN1 sensor that combines pixels for a final 12.5MP image. It’s a big improvement from Pixel 5’s main camera, as it can capture 150 percent more light, with its f/1.85 aperture.

Similar to iPhone cameras, both Pixels feature ultrawide lenses with 12-megapixel sensors. As The Verge notes, the Pixel 6’s selfie cam is 8 megapixels with an 84-degree field of view, while the 6 Pro is 11.1 megapixels and 94 degrees for easier group selfies.

Another advantage the Pixel 6 Pro’s camera setup has over the Pixel 6 is its third telephoto lens with 4x optical zoom coupled to 48 megapixels of resolution. It also has a dedicated 4x zoom camera, which Google claims can go up to 20X with the help of a feature called ‘Super Res Zoom’.

Magic eraser

Both models also boast new features that are exclusively Pixel. These include the Magic Eraser, which automatically removes distractions from photos, and Face Unblur that, as the name suggests, automatically sharpens blurry faces of humans.

Motion Mode allows users to capture crisp images of moving objects, while Real Tone recognizes different skin tones, so photos turn out as real as they can be.

Google also upgraded its existing features, like the Portrait Mode in the Pixel 6 Pro. It now comes with better skin tone rendering and two focal length options—1x and 2x—for a better bokeh effect. Night Sight and its extension, the Astrophotography mode, have likewise upgraded over time.

With the Tensor chip, these new Pixel phones can translate messages, captions, or text in the camera viewfinder through its Live Translate feature. When connected to the internet, this tool can interpret content in up to 55 languages, including French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish.

In terms of security, Google has also incorporated a Titan M2 security chip on the Tensor, which protects your photos, texts, and sensitive data from outside attacks. The feature is further enhanced with up to 5 years of security updates, according to Google.

As GSMArena notes, both of the units’ displays are furnished with Gorilla Glass Victus that Google refers to as 3D glass. The Pixel 6 Pro has a larger 6.7-inches LTPO AMOLED, sharper at 1440p, and refreshes faster at 120Hz, while the Pixel 6 has a smaller and less vivid 6.4-inch 1080p AMOLED with up to 90Hz refresh rate.

The Pixel 6 Pro also comes with a bigger, 5,000mAh battery, while the Pixel 6 uses a smaller 4,600mAh unit. Since Google has already joined Apple and Samsung in ditching its in-box power bricks, users would have to purchase a 30W wired charger for topping up the units. They can also charge them through Google’s new Pixel Stand charger, which was also launched during today’s event.

Both the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will come in black, as well as exclusive colors of Coral and Seafoam for the Pixel 6, and White and Sort Sunny for the Pixel 6 Pro. The Pixel 6 will retail at €649 (~P38,000) in Europe and $599 (~P30,000) in the US, while the Pixel 6 Pro starts at €898 (~P53,000) and $899 (~P46,000).

Both phones will start shipping out in foreign markets on October 28. No word yet on its availability in the Philippines.
