Canon debuts world’s first dual-fisheye lens for 3D VR production

Canon is putting a different and clearly odd perspective to photography, as it recently unveiled a surprising new product — a dual f/2.8 fisheye lens for its EOS R mirrorless camera system.

It features two 5.22m bulging fisheye lenses mounted approximately 60mm apart from each other to match the distance between the human eyes.

Strange as it may look, the lens is designed to ease the challenges of creating virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) content.

In the promotional video Canon released on October 6, its Senior Technical Specialist Brandon Chin described the lens as “the world’s first digital interchangeable lens that can capture stereoscopic 3D 180° VR imagery to a single image sensor.”

This means that when attached to the EOS R5—the only camera it is compatible with for its 8K video capability— the lens internally converts the two circular images it captures into a single file output.

As Engadget notes, the lens supports 190-degree capture that delivers stereoscopic 180-degree 3D footage or photos at up to 8,192 x 4,096 (8K) resolution for AR or VR applications.

It is also equipped with the features typically found in high-end Canon L RF lenses, such as an F2.8 to F16 aperture range, flare and ghosting control, as well as dust and water-resistant seals.

Footages taken by Canon’s new dual-fisheye lens are converted using the EOS VR System comprising of a 1.5.0 firmware update for the R5 and Premiere Pro plug-in, which Canon is releasing soon.

The R5 is retailing at around P254,500 in the Philippines, while the new RF5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye Lens will drop in the US for $1,999 (approximately P100,700) this December.
