Horizon Forbidden West to launch on PS4, PS5 in February 2022

The most anticipated PS5-exclusive Horizon Forbidden West is arriving on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on February 18, 2022, the game’s director Mathijs de Jonge announced during the Gamescom: Opening Night Live stream on Wednesday, August 25.

Horizon Forbidden West is an open-world action-adventure game developed by Amsterdam-based game developer Guerilla Games. It is the sequel to 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn, which sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.

Forbidden West was unveiled in June 2020, with the launch date slated for the second half of 2021. However, Sony got fans abuzz when PlayStation Studio Head Hermen Hulst announced last June that the release date was still tentative.

“For Horizon, we think we are on track to release this holiday season,” Hulst said on the PlayStation blog. “But that isn’t quite certain yet, and we’re working as hard as we can to confirm that to you as soon as we can.”

A month later, on July 29, video game reporter Jeff Grubb of the podcast Great Bomb spilled that Sony could delay Horizon Forbidden West for 2022. The next day, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier confirmed that the company has indeed decided internally to delay the release.

The reports also followed the lengthy reveal of Horizon Forbidden West’s gameplay last May, which, according to de Jonge, consists of Aloy having to save the Earth from “massive supercell storms” and a “collapsing biosphere” caused by a red blight choking wildlife and starving animals and tribes.

During last Wednesday’s Gamescom, de Jorge said that the delay was caused by the “huge impact” the pandemic brought to their team’s workflow. “It’s no surprise that our teams were hugely impacted by the global pandemic; we have been adjusting to new workflows, protocols, and other challenges, while keeping our teams safe and prioritizing a healthy work/life balance,” he said.

Sony will begin taking pre-orders for Horizon Forbidden West on September 2, 2021. Meanwhile, the Enhanced Performance Patch for Horizon Zero Dawn is now live as a free update for all PS5 players.
